Which insert for general steel turning?
CNMG120408 with a CVD-coated grade is the industry workhorse for carbon steel — 8 edges, strong geometry, good chip control. For finishing, use a smaller nose radius; for roughing, a larger one.
Can I turn hardened steel (above 45 HRC) with carbide?
For 45-55 HRC, tough carbide grades with negative geometry can work at reduced speeds. Above that, CBN inserts are the productive choice — they replace grinding in many hard turning applications.
