What does CNMG mean on a turning insert?

CNMG is an ISO 1832 insert designation: C = 80° diamond shape, N = negative clearance angle, M = tolerance class, G = chip breaker type. The numbers that follow specify insert size, thickness and nose radius (e.g. CNMG120408 = 12.7mm inscribed circle, 4.76mm thickness, 0.8mm nose radius).

How do I choose the right turning insert grade?

Match the grade to the workpiece material and operation: CVD-coated grades (e.g. MT-TiCN + Al2O3) for steel and cast iron roughing; PVD-coated grades for stainless steel and finishing; uncoated carbide for aluminum and non-ferrous. Send us your material and cutting parameters and we will recommend the grade.

What is the difference between positive and negative inserts?

Negative inserts have zero clearance on both sides and can be flipped to use both faces — lower cost per edge, better for rigid setups and roughing. Positive inserts have clearance on one side, cut with lower cutting forces and are preferred for thin-walled parts, finishing and low-rigidity machines.
