SNMG inserts are negative 90° square indexable turning inserts with a 0° clearance angle, available in standard ISO sizes SNMG120404 / 120408 / 120412 and SNMG190608 / 190612. The 90° corner gives them the strongest cutting edge of the standard insert shapes, which makes them the first choice for heavy roughing, interrupted cuts and cast iron with scale or sand inclusions. The double-sided negative design delivers 8 cutting edges per insert, keeping cost per edge low even in demanding operations.

Questions Buyers Ask
What does SNMG stand for?
Per ISO 1832: S = square shape with 90° corner angle, N = negative clearance angle (0°), M = tolerance class (medium, ±0.08 to ±0.13mm), G = chip breaker / face type with central hole. SNMG120408: IC 12.7mm, thickness 4.76mm, nose radius 0.8mm.
What is the difference between SNMG and CNMG inserts?
SNMG is a 90° square insert while CNMG is an 80° diamond. The 90° corner gives SNMG the stronger cutting edge, so it takes heavier depths of cut and rougher interrupted cuts with less risk of corner breakage. CNMG's more acute 80° corner gives better access for profiling, internal bores and tighter shoulder work. For heavy roughing and cast iron, SNMG is usually the better choice; for general-purpose and profiling work, many shops prefer CNMG.
How do I choose the nose radius for SNMG inserts?
04 = 0.4mm for finishing and light cuts; 08 = 0.8mm as a general-purpose balance of finish and strength; 12 = 1.2mm (or larger on the 1906 series) for roughing and heavy cuts, where the larger radius adds edge strength but requires higher feed per revolution to avoid vibration.
Which SNMG grade should I use for cast iron?
For grey and ductile cast iron (K group), CVD-coated grades with an Al2O3 top layer provide excellent crater and flank wear resistance at high cutting speeds. For steel roughing with interrupted cuts (P group), tougher substrates and edge-reinforced geometries handle the shock better. Can SNMG inserts handle interrupted cutting?
Yes — this is one of their main strengths. The 90° corner angle and thick negative geometry give the cutting edge high shock resistance, and the edge passivation we apply further reduces chipping when the tool enters and exits the cut. Choose a tougher grade and a slightly larger nose radius for maximum security.
