TNMG inserts are negative 60° triangular (trigon) indexable turning inserts with a 0° clearance angle, available in standard ISO sizes TNMG160404 / 160408 / 160412 and the TNMG2204 series. The triangular geometry delivers a longer cutting edge than an 80° diamond insert of the same inscribed circle, which is why TNMG is a common choice for heavy depth-of-cut roughing and multi-directional turning. Two-sided negative design gives 6 cutting edges per insert (3 per side), keeping cost per edge low without sacrificing edge strength on carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and cast iron.

Questions Buyers Ask

What does TNMG stand for?

Per ISO 1832: T = triangular shape with a 60° included angle, N = negative clearance angle (0°), M = tolerance class (medium), G = chip breaker / clamping type. For example, TNMG160408: inscribed circle 9.525 mm, thickness 4.76 mm, nose radius 0.8 mm.

What is the difference between TNMG and CNMG inserts?

Shape is the main difference: TNMG is a 60° triangle with 3 cutting edges per side (6 total, two-sided), while CNMG is an 80° diamond with 4 edges per side (8 total). For the same inscribed circle, the TNMG cutting edge is longer, so it engages more edge length at heavy depths of cut — a common choice for roughing and multi-directional turning. CNMG offers more indexable corners for general-purpose turning. Both are negative, two-sided inserts.

Which nose radius should I choose — 160404, 160408 or 160412?

The last two digits are the nose radius: 04 = 0.4 mm (finishing, light cuts), 08 = 0.8 mm (general purpose), 12 = 1.2 mm (roughing, heavy cuts, stronger edge). If you are not sure, 160408 is the typical starting point.

Which grade should I use for carbon steel, alloy steel and cast iron?

For carbon and alloy steel (P group) and cast iron (K group) at higher speeds, CVD-coated grades (MT-TiCN + Al2O3 + TiN) give the best wear resistance and thermal stability. For stainless steel (M group), PVD-coated grades with sharper edges reduce work hardening and built-up edge. Send us your material and operation and we will recommend a grade.

Can TNMG inserts be used with my existing tool holders?

Yes — TNMG inserts fit standard negative tool holders for the same ISO seat, such as MTJNR / MTGNR / MTFNR / PTTNR / PTGNR series holders for TNMG 1604 and TNMG 2204 inserts. Check the holder seat against the insert size and you can drop them in without changing setup.
