WNMG inserts are negative 80° trigon-shaped indexable turning inserts with a 0° clearance angle, available in standard ISO sizes WNMG080404 / 080408 (IC 12.7 mm, thickness 4.76 mm, nose radius 0.4 / 0.8 mm). The 80° trigon geometry gives a stronger cutting edge than 60° triangular inserts while keeping better clearance than square shapes, with 6 cutting edges per insert (3 corners × 2 sides). They are the reliable general-purpose choice for external and internal turning, facing and profiling of carbon steel, alloy steel, cast iron and stainless steel in roughing, semi-finishing and finishing operations.

What does WNMG stand for?

Per ISO 1832: W = 80° trigon shape, N = negative clearance angle (0°), M = tolerance class (medium, ±0.08 to ±0.13 mm), G = chip breaker/face type. WNMG080408: IC 12.7 mm, thickness 4.76 mm, nose radius 0.8 mm.

What is the advantage of the 80° trigon shape?

The 80° corner angle gives a noticeably stronger cutting edge than 60° triangular inserts, reducing corner breakage on interrupted cuts and heavier feeds, while the trigon profile still clears the workpiece better than square or 80° diamond shapes in many holders. It is the classic geometry for general-purpose turning where neither maximum strength nor maximum clearance is critical.

What is the difference between WNMG and CNMG inserts?

Both are negative inserts in the same 12.7 mm IC class. CNMG is an 80° diamond shape with 8 cutting edges — lowest cost per edge for continuous turning. WNMG is an 80° trigon with 6 cutting edges but a stronger corner and better approach in certain holders, preferred for heavier feeds, interrupted cuts and some internal operations. Choose CNMG for pure cost per edge, WNMG when edge strength matters more.

Which WNMG grade should I use for stainless steel?

For stainless steel (M group), use PVD-coated grades with sharper, tougher edges — they reduce work hardening and built-up edge. For carbon steel and cast iron (P/K groups), CVD-coated grades give better wear resistance at higher cutting speeds.
